The Committee for Boston in 2001
Box 1010

Dear Supporter of our Bid,

We need your advice.

After months of negotiation with Boston area hotels (they would welcome our convention - but expect us to pay the going rate), we have concluded that Boston hotel prices are simply too high for us to run a great Worldcon here in 2001. (See the attached FAQ sheet for details.) This was not an easy decision for us to make, but detailed research and negotiating have convinced us that fandom could not afford what the Boston hotel industry wants to charge.

We believe that fandom deserves the best possible choice of sites for our annual "family reunion" -- the Worldcon. As it became clear that Boston is priced out of our reach, we looked at Orlando, Florida, as an alternative.

The site used by MagiCon (the 1992 Worldcon) has made us a very attractive offer, with average room rates of about $109/night in 1998 dollars. This proven facility has expanded since MagiCon was there -- there are more available hotel rooms, a larger convention center, and a major shopping mall with more restaurant choices nearby.

While we were working with the MagiCon site, we also got an unsolicited offer from two hotels on Disney World: the Swan and the Dolphin. They're offering us rates around $119/night (also in 1998 dollars), excellent facilities costs, a site within walking distance of Epcot, and free transportation and discounted tickets within Disney. Lower cost hotels are also available at Disney.

So, we've got two terrific offers from Orlando.

The question we're asking you is: Which one should we bid for?

We'd like to talk to every one of you in person, but we can't -- so we're sending you this letter instead. Please indicate your preference by filling out the enclosed, stamped post card and dropping it in the mail to us. We want to find out what you think about this before we make our decision (we want to do this by January 15, 1998). We'll be posting the results on our web page at: http://world.std.com/~sbarsky/location.html (feel free to stop by regularly to check our progress). You can also reach us at info@noreascon.org.

Every Worldcon needs a bit of magic.
